THIS WIND To Premiere As Part Of PRAIRIE TALES 17

It seems like a lifetime ago that we made This Wind

It was the summer of 2013. I had just received my first arts grant. I felt I had a good script. I was elated. I would have the chance to make a movie with a real crew and a real movie camera. I gathered all of my friends and we trekked out to a piece of land owned by my dear friend Hans’ family, who were the most gracious of hosts.  We raced against the sun and the camera kept overheating with the long, long takes I demanded of it. But we muddled through, and at the end of the day, we had a little movie about two people who come to accept the quiet grace of defeat. A very Canadian position, in my estimation.

I am thrilled that this film will, after a long, meandering road, finally have a home as a part of Prairie Tales. I can’t thank everyone who helped make it happen enough, but I would be remiss if I didn’t single out my producer Katelyn Mann, who has taught me so much about the value of constant communication and organization and made me a much, much better producer. And my dear friend Aerlan, who shot this film and still provides the best criticism and insight into the work we do, and inspires me to keep pushing to get better and better. And of course the film’s stars, Andrew and Cayley, who were so vulnerable for us all alone in that meadow and gave everything they had for us. Thank you.

If it behooves you, you can see the premiere of Prairie Tales 17 a the Napier Theatre in Drumheller at 7 PM on June 11th. After that, I hope to report to you with news of a screening near you soon.

Until next time.
